Clarity Enhanced Diamonds a Wonderful Opportunity

Clarity Enhanced Diamonds a Wonderful Opportunity

With the economy being as it is I’ve noticed an increase in the number of customers asking for I1 and I2 clarity diamonds. In the jewelry industry we call these “imperfect” diamonds because the stone will have inclusions that can be seen to the naked eye. When these inclusions become numerous or large the light becomes obstructed and prevented from proper reflection. The price savings can be great though and on a 1.00ct diamond for instance you could save thousands. Heres an example: a 1.00ct round SI2-H could be $3500 vs. a 1.00ct round I2-H at $2250. The only issue is the beauty of the diamond, chances are there isn’t any!

How are Diamonds Clarity Enhanced?

This is where a clarity enhanced diamond comes in to play. You can take that same $2250 I2-H 1.00ct diamond and enhance the inclusion to become less visible while enhancing the beauty. Diamonds are formed when carbon is exposed to extreme amounts of pressure. While forming, pockets of air can get trapped inside of the diamond causing fractures and large inclusions. These diamonds become contenders for clarity enhance treatments. Treating the diamond begins by removing the air from the cavities and then filling them with a special “diamond like” substance. This substance is much like a high performance resin and is nearly as reflective as the diamond material itself.

Choosing a Clarity Enhanced Diamond

Choosing a clarity enhanced diamond is a little different process then selecting a high-quality certified diamond. You’re choosing a CE diamond for a completely different reason than non-treated diamonds. A clarity enhanced diamond will offer a nice look and a good amount of brilliance for not a lot of money. This should be your aim when choosing the correct clarity enhanced diamond. Some customers still have the tendency to get real technical with the stones like asking about certification, dimensions, viewing the diamond under the microscope and such. While you’re completely entitled to doing such investigation, it’s counterproductive to why you’re purchasing a clarity enhanced diamond. People choose a CE diamond because they want a diamond that appears or faces up very pretty but doesn't cost a lot of money. The best approach to choosing a CE diamond is to choose the highest performing and best looking diamond, base it entirely on looks not technical details.

Not all Clarity Enhanced Diamonds are Created Equal

CE diamonds are in fact graded for color and clarity but you should consider this a loose quality grade. The reason why you shouldn’t take the grade too literal is because all CE diamonds start off as I1, I2, or I3. These diamonds wouldn’t be clarity enhanced if they were legitimate say SI2’s or SI1’s. So the bottom line is that you choose your diamond based on its eye appeal and not what is listed on a piece of paper. That said, each CE diamond is has its own unique characteristics that can’t be quantified on a certification or by a clarity grade. Some CE diamonds are far more beautiful than others even though the pricing may be the same. You should take the time to work with a jeweler that’s willing to show you multiple diamonds and then you’ll able to cherry pick the best of the best. If you do this, you’ll certainly maximize the size, beauty and brilliance of your purchase.

Summary

  • Clarity enhanced diamonds are a great way to get a better looking diamond when on a strict budget.

  • The existing inclusions are treated in an effort to make them less visible.

  • Don’t get caught up in the clarity and color grading game, choose your diamond mainly by its appearance.

  • Look at many clarity enhanced diamonds, some are much better than others.
